Description

In the introduction to Flipping Church, Michael Baughman writes, “This book only highlights twelve bold Methodist church planters who have found some measure of success (an elusive term) and offer lessons to the church. There are far more innovative pastors out there and far more still who took a leap of faith and crashed to the ground.” I am one of those leapers and crashers. In 2011 I was asked to plant a new United Methodist Church. I immediately began to look for other adventurous souls around the denomination and I stumbled upon a Facebook page where I was introduced to many of the authors whose stories you will read about in this book. From churches in coffee shops, to churches in bars, to missional monastic communities, to progressive urban expressions of church, I had the privilege of gleaning from some of the most innovative church planters around the country. Unfortunately, my plant only lasted three years, but I continue to be inspired by the tireless efforts of my United Methodist brothers and sisters who take risks and launch new, creative expressions of church that continue to reach new people for Jesus. I was thrilled to see that this anthology was being published and I was deeply moved reading the stories of my “friends” and their churches. Flipping Church is a hopeful book; a book that offers practical advice for existing churches and entrepreneurial pastors, and reminds us all that the reports of the death of the church are greatly exaggerated. I highly recommend this book to pastors, lay people, church planters, denominational leaders and anyone interested in learning more about how God is working and moving in fresh ways through creative, new communities of faith. Someone once said if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got. The authors in this book refuse to do things the way they’ve always been done. They’re flipping the church. And turning the world upside down (Acts 17.6)!
